Abstract

Initiated in 2015, the Integration of the Eurasian Economic Union and Belt and Road Initiative has attracted the attention of not only the states of the Eurasian region, but also the global economic and political community. The paper examines the cooperation struggles and integration prospects of the EEU and BRI. It studies the institutional structure and functional principles of both organization and project and compares the goals and strategies of their leaders - Russia and China - to determine the matching and clashing interests of both sides. The paper also analyzes the documents and data of actual integration activity to identify the degree of productivity and readiness of both sides for cooperation. The research shows that China and Russia have a number of serious problems, such as diverging political and economic interests, which detain the process of EEU and BRI integration. Thus, due to the fact that relations between Russia and China are not only collaborative but also competitive, the implementation of integration is much slower than planned.
