There are birthplaces of the world-known poet Mikhail Sespel and famous artist Anatoly Mittov. Some of the historic sights are really worth seeing.

How to Get to Kanash

Please, look at maps. The District of Kanash is a part of the Chuvash Republic. It is situated in the central European part of Russia on the right bank of the Volga River.

Our district is one of the largest in Chuvashia. You can get here by train. The administrative centre of our district, the town of Kanash, is also a major railway station. You can come by car or bus, too. Kanash is connected with many regions of Russia by modern motorways.

The District of Kanash (Russian: Канашский райомн; Chuvash: Канаш районe) is a district (raion) of the Chuvash Republic, Russia.

The district's administrative center, the town of Kanash, is located 84 kilometers (52 mi) from Chuvashia's capital city of Cheboksary.

Area of the district: 981.4 square kilometers (378.9 sq mi);

District's population: 42,623 (2002 Census); 46,236 (1989 Census).

The district was formed on September 5, 1927.

There are 108 villages, the largest of them are Shikhazany, Sugaikassi, Bolshiye Bikshikhi, Toburdanovo and Maliye Kibechi.

The district is situated in the central part of Chuvashia, bordering Tsivilsky and Krasnoarmeysky Districts in the north, Urmarsky and Yantikovsky Districts in the east, Komsomolsky and Ibresinsky Districts in the south, and Vurnarsky District in the west.

In the south-west there is a short border-line with Tataria.

The Head of the District (Chairman of the Deputies' Assembly) is Ivan Timofeyevich Ivanov.

The head of the District Administration is Vladislav Vasilyevich Sofronov.

This is the typical landscape of our district: you can see green fields, low hills with forests and ravines. The picture was taken between the villages of Vutabosi and Novoye Uryumovo.

Akatui

Any season and any weather is good for visiting our district. But still, most of tourists prefer summer months of June, July and August. No wonder: the beautiful landscapes are more attractive, you can enjoy swimming and sunbathing, rod-fishing, gathering berries and mushrooms in summer. We'd advise you to come in June and enjoy Akatui - the traditional Chuvash festival of farmers with concerts of folk and pop-music, sports competitions. Come and have fun with us!
