Turkestan — one of the tourist centers of South Kazakhstan, educational and cultural center, a center of domestic and foreign tourism. Place of interest: Hanaka (mausoleum), Yasawi, Railway Station. Turkestan a sacred city called "little Mecca".

1. History
Turkestan (каз. Т?ркістан) -- a city in the South Kazakhstan area. A city of regional submission.One of the most ancient cities of Kazakhstan.

In the X century - Shavgar (Shavagar), from the XII century - Yasa (Iasi). In the Middle Ages Yasa was a city-fortress. In the XII century, there lived a poet and thinker Hodja Ahmet Yasawi, who was buried there, too. The Central Asian Emir Tamerlane in the years 1396-1398 next to the mausoleum was built mosque Yasawi: got religion in the Muslim world as a religious center - Azret Sultan (Sultan Hazrat).
The first mention of the city of Turkestan as relate to the XV century.
The capital of the Kazakh Khanate in the XVI-XVIII centuries.

Today Turkestan (since 1968 a city of regional subordination of the South Kazakhstan Region) area of 24 square kilometers, has become a major industrial, educational and cultural center, a center of domestic and foreign tourism. The city has been successfully operating 13 industrial facilities, including the largest:
Machine-Building Plant Kuat.
AO Turkestan-agroremmash.
Sewing Knitting Factory.
Plant antibiotics.
The joint Kazakh-British venture, "parabolic" for the production of dressings.
3. Place of interest
Hanaka (mausoleum) of the end of the XV century on the tomb of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi - a famous Sufi Tomb of the Kazakh khans Esimhana, Ablai Khan, Abulhairhana etc. burial place Kazybek Bi, one of the founders of the first set of Kazakh law "Zhety Zhargy".
Railway Station (1905) - an architectural monument.
In 2000 the city celebrated the 1500 anniversary. In accordance with the plan of activities to mark used for capital construction, 1.2713 billion tenge or U.S. $ 10 million.

Pilgrims say, three trip in Turkestan equal to a small hajj to Mecca. Turkestan became one of the tourist centers of South Kazakhstan.
