Music is one of the main directions and forms of art as it is one of the most versatile branches of human self-expression. It creates images, affects the people's emotions without using words or verbal images, without pictures, sculptures, and other material objects. We can hear music everywhere: in the streets and at home, over the radio and on TV, in the shops and in the parks. A rare advertisement on the radio or TV, a shop in the Arbat Street, a rare car stay without music turned on. Music also has a very important social meaning: music can represent the historical epoch, the nation and the social class it is popular among.

The prehistorical forms of music were probably drum-based, and were used in religious ceremonies as representations of animals. It is known that by 4000 BCE the Egyptians had created harps and flutes. Greece was the root of all Classical art, so it's no coincidence that Classical music is rooted in Grecian innovations. In 600 BCE, famed mathematician Pythagoras dissected music as a science and developed the keystone of modern music: the octave scale. Most of the music created after Rome fell was used by the church. The Catholic religion has a long history of involvement with the musical arts. With the onset of the Renaissance, the rules of music were about to change completely. This was the beginning of a new enlightened age that would witness some of the greatest musical minds ever produced. In the next centuries, many classical composers such as Vivaldi, Mozart, and Rimsky-Korsakov became famous, then jazz, rock-n-roll, rock, rap and techno appeared.

Music unquestionably affects our emotions. We tend to listen to music that reflects our mood. When we're happy we may listen to upbeat music; when we're sad we may listen to slower, moving songs; when we're angry we may listen to darker music with heavy guitar, drums, and vocals that reflect our level of anger. For example people who listen to rock, are usually doing so because rock exactly matches what is happening inside them. There is some kind of anger that they want to express, there is some kind of energy that they want to get out or there is something that's bothering them and that's why they listen to songs that resonate with their inner feelings.

Music appeals to our hearts and alters our feelings. It conquers our souls and enriches our minds. Besides, listening to music is the perfect way to spend free time and not to feel bored. Music helps us to interact with the realities that are often considered unknown or mysterious. This is caused by the fact that music can be perceived and understood by any living creature. Once, the ethologists turned on a Mozart's music record next to a cage with rats, which forced them to stop running chaotically around the cage and to listen to the recording placidly. Music can describe different feelings, combine and blend them, and make the listener experience, and it is almost impossible to name them or to describe them verbally. Music can easily cope with this problem. The most frail and light emotions can be described with the use of music. Thus, music names the things that can very hardly be given a name.

Music occupies a completely special niche in my soul. I think it brings me closer to my friends and family. I also feel that it helps me to get through problems. Music is an immensely powerful thing and has a huge place next to my heart.
