The use of modern methods in the process of teaching foreign languages helps students develop critical thinking and analysis skills, a creative approach and emotional contact with their group mates, develop teamwork skills and solve communicative, cognitive and educational problems. Along with this, innovative information and communication methodological approaches enhance the competencies of teachers, open up enormous opportunities for the practical application and improvement of modern methods, and have a positive impact on the effectiveness of classes and the professional training of students.

Teaching English vocabulary at university requires modern approaches that take into account changes in teaching methods, technology and students' needs [1]. Here are some relevant and effective approaches:

Contextual learning

Contextual learning involves teaching words and phrases in context, which helps students better understand their meaning and use. Instead of learning words in isolation, students learn to apply them in real-life situations, which improves retention and use of vocabulary.

Examples: Using articles, stories, news, and dialogues that illustrate the use of new words in specific situations.

Topic-based learning

This approach involves grouping words around specific topics or situations, which helps students remember and associate vocabulary better. Topic-based learning can be particularly useful for specialist courses such as Business English or Technical English.

Examples: Topics might include Medicine, Travel, Finance, etc., with a focus on key vocabulary for each area.

Corpus-based approach

Using corpora such as the British National Corpus (BNC) or the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) allows students to learn vocabulary based on frequency and actual usage in the language [3]. This approach helps identify the most frequently used words and expressions, making learning more practical and targeted.

Examples: Analyzing and studying the frequency of words and phrases in academic writing or conversation.

Communicative approach

The communicative approach focuses on the use of language for communication and interaction. Vocabulary is taught through conversational practices, discussions and role plays, which stimulates the active use of new words in speech.

Examples: Organizing debates, interviews, presentations and role plays where students must use new vocabulary.

Interactive technologies and digital resources

Modern technology provides many tools for learning and teaching vocabulary. Using mobile apps, online platforms, interactive games and virtual classrooms can avariety to lessons and make learning more fun.

Examples: Apps like Quizlet for creating flashcards or Kahoot for creating quies, as well as using online dictionaries and collaborative platforms like Padlet.

Project-based learning

Project-based learning involves students completing long-term projects related to the topic being studied [2]. During the project, students delve deeper into a specific topic and actively use new vocabulary.

Examples: Preparing research projects, creating videos, conducting interviews, and preparing reports.

Studying collocations and phraseology

Teaching collocations, phrasal verbs and idioms helps students speak more naturally and fluently. This approach emphasizes the importance of learning not only individual words but also combinations of words.

Examples: Lessons focusing on phrasal verbs, idioms or specific expressions for different contexts such as academic or business communication.

Inductive Instruction

Instead of explaining the rules and meanings of words first, teachers can use an inductive approach where students discover patterns and infer meanings from context. This encourages critical thinking and independent learning.

Examples: Teachers give students texts with new words and ask them to figure out the meanings and rules for using these words on their own.

Using Multimedia

Videos, audio recordings, podcasts and other multimedia resources can be effective tools for teaching vocabulary [4]. They help improve understanding of context, intonation and pronunciation.

Examples: Using TED Talks, documentaries, interviews and podcasts to learn specialized vocabulary and discuss current topics.

Adaptive Learning

Using technology for adaptive learning allows you to tailor content and teaching methods to the individual needs and level of students. This can include automated tests and assignments that are adjusted based on the student's progress.

Examples: Using platforms like Duolingo or Rosetta Stone that adapt assignments to the student's level of knowledge and learning goals.

These modern approaches to teaching vocabulary help students not only memorize new words, but also use them effectively in different contexts, making the learning process more interesting and effective. These modern approaches provide a variety of methods and tools for effective teaching of English vocabulary at university. They promote deep understanding and active use of the language, which is an important aspect of successful learning and practice of English.
