In the case of independent journals, all these activities involve the work and time of professionals, both from the academic field and from the technical field. And there is one more aspect my journal, for example, rejects almost the same number of articles that are finally published in each issue, based on reviewers' or editorial staff indications. The processing fee covers, probably, one third of the work done and believe me, I know very well what I am saying, since I know both sides of the matter. . to explain there are journals that do not charge contributors; those journals are then included in the subscription system of libraries; libraries sell access to their databases to universities; universities pay for that; that is reflected in the salary...
