Yasynetska O.A. Translation of New Publicistic Metaphors of the English Language into Ukrainian. - Manuscript.

The thesis focuses on the conditions and ways of translating new mass media metaphors of the English language into Ukrainian. Taking into account the communicative and functional peculiarities of translating new metaphors, the thesis develops a typology of translating metaphoric neologisms of the 1990-s - 2000-s. Special attention is given to the structural and semantic types of their formation as well as lexical and semantic categories of innovations. It also discloses conceptual and lingual peculiarities of translating English-language new metaphors that denote social realia and lingually represent conceptual metaphors.

Loan translation is recognized as a typical way of rendering English new metaphors into Ukrainian, since it preserves the structural and lexical identity with the source metaphor as well as renders its communicatively expressive social and cultural, lexical and semantic contents. At the structural and semantic levels, loan translation prevails in translating new metaphoric phrases, compound words, and affixed derivatives. Loan-translation of metaphors that have appeared due to semantic derivation renders their semantic basis. New blends are mostly translated by means of semi-loan translation - loan-translation combined with transcoding. Differences of the types and means of conversion in the source and target languages make descriptive translation the most common method of rendering respective metaphors. Due to various sense, form and context peculiarities of abbreviations/ acronyms it is impossible to determine any type of their translation as prevailing. On the whole, if any existing word acquires a new meaning, the type of translating the new coinage tends to be the same as it used to be for this lexical item.

While considering the types of translation for the six lexico-semantic categories of innovations, distinguished in the thesis, we observe that with transnominations descriptive translation explains how the new form relates to the existing meaning; loan translation reflects to what extent the new form is synonymous to the previous form of expressing the existing meaning; concretization highlights the necessary peculiarities as to the correspondence between the new form and the old meaning. For semantic innovations, descriptive translation explains how deeply the new meaning can integrate into the available form; semantic loan translation justifies the possibility of the suggested metaphoric association in the target language; concretization specifies how much the old form refers to the new meaning.

As to translating neologisms created in the result of semantic reconsideration, we recognize that since the form and the meaning have already coexisted in language, their neological combination requires some argumentation, and, therefore, laconic descriptive specifying translation is quite useful. Further, with pure neologisms, in the target Ukrainian language descriptive translation explains the motivation; semi-loan translation renders the sense of analogy between the new and traditional components of the innovative form, which speaks of creating new analogies or variants of existing phenomena; transcoding, in its turn, is significantly applied to new notions of the Internet and technological development and facilitates borrowing of their names.

Paronymic metaphoric neologisms can be adequately translated into the target language with the help of loan translation combined with semantic modulation or transcoding; it can also be useful to apply explication, especially just by means of the sentence context. Finally, translation of escalations depends on the method of translating the previous form; here loan translation and descriptive translation are typical.

The thesis formulates a lingual and conceptual methodology, reveals the types of translating new metaphors of the English language into Ukrainian. It accentuates lingual and stylistic analogies and metaphor translation conformity as well as considers a number of extralingual and lingual factors that determine the translatability and interlanguage equivalence of new metaphors.
