Politeness strategies in verbal communication of representatives of British and American cultures

"The administration doesn't mind?"

"Don't be naive, my boy." He had his pipe going to his satisfaction and was puffing great stinking clouds of smoke out into the ratty apartment living room. His voice accordingly became more rolling, more orotund, more Buckleyesque. "What's good for Wanless is good for the Harrison Psychology Department, which next year will have its very own building-no more slumming with those sociology types. And what's good for Psych is good for Harrison State College. And for Ohio. And all that blah-blah."

"Do you think it's safe?"

"They don't test it on student volunteers if it isn't safe," Quincey said. "If they have even the slightest question, they test it on rats and then on convicts. You can be sure that what they're putting into you has been put into roughly three hundred people before you, whose reactions have been carefully monitored."

" Are you going in on it?"

Quincey had smiled. His father ran a chain of extremely successful menswear stores in Ohio and Indiana. "Don't need two hundred that bad," he said. "Besides, I hate needles."

"Oh."

"Look, I'm not trying to sell it, for Chrissakes; you just looked sort of hungry. The chances are fifty-fifty you'll be in the control group, anyway. Two hundred bucks for taking on water. Not even tapwater, mind you. Distilled water."

The final reply of Quincey includes bald on-record strategy, this rather harsh way is chosen to finally calm down Andy and explain that the experiment is not dangerous.

Strategies used:

Positive politeness

"How would you feel about a quick two hundred?"

Bald on-record

"Look, I'm not trying to sell it, for Chrissakes; you just looked sort of hungry."

Extract 4

"Thank you," Andy said. Struggle to be polite. Struggle to go on. For Charlie. If he had been alone, he would have killed himself long ago. A man wasn't meant to bear pain like this.

"You sure you're okay, mister? You look awful white."

"I'm fine, thanks." He began to shake Charlie. "Hey, kid." He was careful not to use her name. It probably didn't matter, but the caution came as naturally as breathing.

"Wake up, we're here."

Charlie muttered and tried to roll away from him.

"Come on, doll. Wake up, hon."

Charlie's eyes fluttered open-the direct blue eyes she had got from her mother-and she sat up, rubbing her face. "Daddy? Where are we?"

"Albany, hon. The airport." And leaning closer, he muttered, "Don't say anything yet."

" Okay." She smiled at the cab driver, and the cabby smiled back. She slipped out of the cab and Andy followed her, trying not to stagger.

"Thanks again, man," the cabby said. "Listen, hey. Great fare. Don't tell me, I'll tell you."

Andy shook the outstretched hand. "Take care."

In the extract above the main character has to stick to positive politeness strategies ("Thank you,"; "Take care.") not to arise suspicion on the side of the taxi driver that he has deceived. The positive way pays off, so that the taxi driver answers the same way showing interest in his communication partner (“You sure you're okay, mister? You look awful white.”)

Strategies used:

Positive politeness

"You sure you're okay, mister? You look awful white." - attending to hearer's needs.

"Thank you" and other markers of gratitude.

2.6 The Analysis of the Extracts from “Christine” by Stephen King

Extract 1

In the extract below, the interaction between two close friends is illustrated. The interaction is held within the boundaries of positive politeness, with the use of bald on-record (Go get it…'), since the communication partakers know each other well, and the use of it won't be taken as an offence.

'Did you bring your lunch?' I asked.

'Yeah, brown-bagging it.'

'Go get it. Let's eat out on the bleachers'

'Aren't you sick of that football field by now?' Arnie asked. 'If you'd spent much more time on your belly last Saturday, I think one of the custodians would have planted you.'

'I don't mind. We're playing away this week. And I want to get out of here.'

'All right, meet you out there.'

Strategies used:

Bald on-record

'Go get it. Let's eat out on the bleachers' - offer.

Positive politeness

'If you'd spent much more time on your belly last Saturday, I think one of the custodians would have planted you.' - joke.

Extract 2

In the extract below, the use of bald on-record strategy in the potentially dangerous situation is illustrated.

I looked around at the kid next to me, some nerdy freshman I didn't know. He looked absolutely hypnotised, all eyes. 'Hey,' I said, and when he didn't look around I slammed my elbow into his side.

'Hey!'

He jumped and looked around at me in terror

'Go get Mr Casey. He eats his lunch in the wood-shop office. Go get him right now.'

Repperton glanced at me, then glanced at Arnie. 'Come on, Cunningham,' he said. 'What do you say, you want to go for it?'

'Put down the knife and I will, you shitter,' Arnie said. His voice was perfectly calm. Shitter, where had I heard that word before? From George LeBay, hadn't it been? Sure. It had been his brother's word. It apparently wasn't a word Repperton cared for. He flushed and stepped closer to Arnie. Arnie circled away. I thought something was going to happen pretty quick maybe one of those things the call for stitches and leave a scar.

'You go get Casey now,' I told the nerdy-looking freshman, and he went. But I thought everything would probably go down before Mr Casey got back . . . unless I could maybe slow things down a little.

'Put down the knife, Repperton,' I said.

The situation is focused on a high school pupil, who having a knife in his hand, threatens other pupils. The use of bald on-record strategies here is fully acceptable, thus no direct orders will be of any offence due to the circumstances.

Strategies used:

Bald on-record

'Go get Mr Casey. Go get him right now.'

'You go get Casey now,'

'Put down the knife, Repperton.'

2.7 Results of Empirical Analysis and Their Interpretation

After the analysis of the extracts from the books by Stephen King and Moe Hyder, it is possible to create a number of diagrams to illustrate the prevailing choice of strategies in American and British linguistic cultures.

On the diagram 1, it is clearly seen that positive politeness strategies are more common for British and American people than others. 16 cases has been found, which is 47 percent (see Diagram 1).

After that we have Bald on-record with 11 detected cases of use and 25 percent of the whole number. This result can be explained by a variety of situations where the speakers are under mental pressure, thus they are forced to interact without showing much care about maintaining face.

Negative politeness has 10 cases in this observation, 23 percent total.

Indirect strategies are rarely used due to the fact that this strategy has limitations in according to the situations where it can be used. 2 cases detected. 5 percent total.

The second diagram indicates total number of sentences from the extracts in which the cases of use of politeness strategies were detected (see Diagram 2).

The variety of sentences used as the agents of politeness strategies does not make a marked difference in total percentage of each strategy; however, the numbers slightly change.

Positive politeness - 42%

Negative politeness - 33%

Bald on-record - 22%

Indirect (off-record) - 3%

Summary and Conclusions

After the examination of the extracts from the books by Stephen King and Moe Hyder, it is clearly seen how the use of different politeness strategies can help in reaching goals of the speaker, as well as misuse of those strategies ruins the whole communication and prevents the speaker from succeeding in the communication process

The results of the research, obtained from the analysis of factual material, allow us to make the following conclusions:

1. The strategies of politeness have their own cases of application.

2. The use of those strategies in correct situations can be of great help in reaching the speakers' goals of communication.

2. The misuse of those strategies can harm the process of communication and prevent speakers' from reaching their goals of communication.

Conclusion

The results of theoretical research, and the data, gathered during the analysis of the practical material, make it possible to form following conclusions:

1. The value of such notion as politeness can't be argued due to the fact that any form of verbal behavior, after all, is likely to be associated with whether the polite way or the opposite one. This research has made it clear that politeness is a widespread phenomenon that covers every aspect of the verbal communication.

2. The depth of integration of this notion into the everyday communication process expressed in the works by modern authors is hard to overestimate. That being said, the extensive study of those works was a necessary step to achieve the aims of this research paper.

Summing up the results of this research, it has to be said that the aims which were mentioned in the introductory part have been reached:

- The notion of politeness has been defined, as well as all the corresponding terms, which is how the first two aims were fulfilled in the first chapter of this work.

- The study of the works by modern American and British authors and the analysis of the extracts from those works have been made to define the place of strategies of politeness in the verbal communication from socio-pragmatic point of view, as well as the categorization of the extracts according to the types of verbal behaviors illustrated in them.
