YORK THEATRE ROYAL

About york theatre royal
York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the beautiful city of York for over 270 years and is one of the country's leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200, 000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime starring Berwick Kaler, the UK's longest-running Dame.
Over the last ten years York Theatre Royal's work has expanded to include collaborations with the wider community and school groups both on and off stage. The theatre has seen an increase in the number of young people wanting to get involved and as a result they now have one of the largest youth theatre groups in the country with over 300 members.
In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children hosted at the National Railway Museum and then transferred to the old Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1, 000 members of the community.
The theatre reopened Friday 22 April 2017 following a Ј6million redevelopment, with a new roof, an extended and re-modelled front of house area, a refurbished and redecorated main auditorium and with major improvements to access and environmental impact. York Theatre Royal is now a building fit for a 21st century audience that will be sustainable and able to thrive into the future.
Be part of our history
Thomas Keregan and his wife Elizabeth established the theatre in 1734 on a converted tennis court.
Ten years later following the untimely death of Thomas, his wife built what was then known as the `New Theatre' on the present site.
Our building is a patchwork quilt of many periods. A Roman well hides beneath the stage, 12th century remains of what was once a hospital mingles with the Georgian interior, while the Victorian faзade is fused with award winning 1960s poured concrete design. The amalgam of architecture is a fine example of how builders of the past would reuse sound walls and encompass them within their development.
As part of our major refurbishment in 2015 we will be exploring our rich narrative. We are keen to find out how our building can better serve the people of York and our visitors from further afield. We are also eager to hear stories that you may have; perhaps memories of past Pantomimes, wartime visits when theatre offered a little escapism or maybe a more recent show or event that will always remain in your memory.

Learning & engagement
Primary school
York Theatre Royal's Creative Engagement team works extensively throughout York and surrounding areas to forge partnerships with schools and colleges, offering activities, workshops and projects to teachers and students. Our experienced and dedicated educational practitioners work closely with teachers to create stimulating programmes in which productions are targeted, plays are unravelled and the processes of making and producing them is explored.
Bespoke workshops, INSETS for teachers, tour and industry days are available upon request, as well as education packs on selected productions.
We are in partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company on their national Associate Schools programme, which aims to provide access to students and teachers with the best access to learning, experiencing and understanding Shakespeare.
York Theatre Royal believes in partnerships: it is at the core of our work and central to our ethos as a community and cultural organisation. Playhouse is a national collaboration between Theatre Royal Plymouth, Polka Theatre, Birmingham Rep, Bristol Old Vic and York Theatre Royal. The five theatres work together to commission professional playwrights each year to write short plays specifically for large casts of young people aged 8 to 11 years to perform. There will be four festivals performing the new plays across the UK. Previous writer's include Julia Donaldson, Mike Kenny, David Wood and Philip Ridley.
Each theatre works with schools in their city. The project is launched with representatives from all schools coming together for a two day retreat with the writers. Following the retreat, the teachers then return to school to rehearse the play with professional development opportunities throughout and the class perform their play in our Studio theatre in July.
Work experience
At York Theatre Royal we are always looking for ways to meaningfully engage with and develop the skills of young people and emerging artists through work placements, School work experience and our award winning TakeOver Festival which is our most exciting and innovative work experience placement opportunity for young people aged 12-26.

Artsmark
Artsmark is the Arts Council England's flagship programme to enable schools to evaluate, strengthen and celebrate their arts and cultural provisions. Artsmark contributes to the cultural aspect of Ofsted's requirement that a school promotes students spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Artsmark gives every child and young person the opportunity to create, perform and to gain knowledge and understanding of the arts through participation and visiting arts organisations.
York Theatre Royal offers support and engagement to York schools and the surrounding areas in the pursuit of Artsmark. We offer a wide range of opportunities for schools to enable them to engage and promote young people in the arts through backstage tours, theatre workshops and partnership programmes.
