Abstract
Centering around Yongdap Station, the last subway station on the lower side of Cheonggye-Stream, this research attempts to overcome the disconnection of Yong-dap-dong and Sageun-dong districts and to provide ecological and social links through associating with the Cheonggye-Stream. It also aims to seek any possibilities to convert a subway station into public architecture embracing new normal culture and, to create a social platform where residents and visitors are met.

Introduction
connecting metro station architecture
Background and Purpose of project. Yongdap subway Station is located at the downstream of Cheonggye-Stream which starts from Cheonggye-Plaza. When the line from the Sinseol-dong Station to Sports Complex Station opened in 1980, it was called a `Base Station' due to its adjacency to the Gunja Vehicle Base. Then, the line was separated by the Seongsu Line with the opening of the Euljiro Entrance-Seongsu section. Connected to Sageun-dong across the Cheonggye-Stream, the Yongdap Station served as a passageway to the college students' leasing tow before Hanyang University Station was built. As promenade and sports facilities were recently installed and various events were held along the Cheonggye-Stream, however, the Yongdap Station is starting to change into a general station used by visitors beyond the role of a platform for resident. The study is bringing up a subject how to utilize the subway station for overcoming the separation between Yongdap-dong and Sageun-dong districts, ecologically and socially, through a link with Cheonggye-Stream, and purposes to create a new place that plays a role as a social platform for communication between residents and increasing users.
Contents and method of project. This study departs from asking questions how to convert Yongdap Station used only for a passage into a social and public space, and how to have a subway station reprogrammed to a cultural space preparing for the future society. Targeting the vicinity of Yongdap Station and the Cheonggye-Stream, the study redefines the border condition between Yongdap-dong and Sageun-dong, by a new role of the subway station as mediator and by an ecological link of the city and Nature. The main argument in design experiment is focused on how to associate the Yong-dap Station with the pedestrian overpass, which has recently become Terrain vague, and how to program the inside of existing station to integrate the three major areas of the site. Suggesting the border condition between Sageun-dong and Yongdap-dong as a conceptual landmark of the region, the study purposed a `Platform Park' by utilizing the subway station to an ecological passage that links the Cheonggye-Stream promenade with the city.

Basic planning overview
Reasons and analysis for site selection
Site selection and Reasons. Cheonggye-Stream has been restored to become a major cultural asset of the city since 2003, which was covered for 47 years. The restoration has triggered manifold historio-cultural investigations to make the Around Cheonggye-Stream. show off its status as a mecca of the Josun Dynasty history. There are also diverse memories superimposed along the Around Stream., which is like flourished traces of urban culture such as markets and squares, or like a nightmare of the slums of shantytown in the post-war and modernization period. The restoration of Cheonggye-Stream also brought back up the scenery of Seoul's nature which had been for long time obstructed by the elevated city-highway. Locating directly along Cheonggye-Stream, the Yongdap subway station is now serving as a transfer station to the subway Line 2. The shantytown-slums along the around Stream in the area of Sageun-dong and Yongdap-dong were demolished in 1980 when the subway line #2 was exposed to the ground, and an inner-circulation elevated road was built, The Yongdap Station, the only subway station exposed to the Cheonggye-Stream, has the potential to become a monument as it records the depressed period and rapid changes in Korean modern history. Although there is a museum to commemorate the Cheonggye-Stream Restoration in Majang-dong, it is not as useful as the subway station because of not only its poor accessibility but also its less usability as a social platform for communication between local residents and visitors. If Yongdap Station marries various programs combined with the local history and ecological attributes of Cheonggye-Stream , accordingly, the infrastructure separating the region is replaced with a mediative border condition and the subway station is to be reborn as public architecture of which the platform becomes a social public space that sustains a New Normal culture.
Site analysis
Macro analysis: Historical archive extending from Gwanghwamun to the downstream of Cheonggye-Stream. Cheonggye-Stream, built in the Joseon Dynasty, naturally has made a historical archive. [Figure 2] outlines the flow of the Stream from Gwanghwamun Cheonggye-Plaza to the downstream and shows the location role of Yongdap Station terminating the grooved linear space. Important places and city programs are marked on each the node. Despite that the two bridges linking Yongdap-dong with Sageun-dong can become a commemorable place for the separation of the two regions, the focus placed only on the connection has prevented the bridges from being a vessel containing programs. A bridge, a place for passing and commemorating, also becomes a landmark of memory on ancient separation.

Micro analysis: Yongsan National Park and Itaewon General Commercial Facilities. The downstream of Cheonggyecheon where the area of Yongdap-dong and Sageun-dong belong to has been recently isolated in all directions by the innercirculation elevated highway, subway Line#2, and railway Depot. It is Cheonggye-Stream that, as an ecological member of the city, has played a role to withstand a sprawl of infrastructure and the city.

The Yongdap-Sagun Bridge is expected to carry major programs that link the newly created Yongdap Station with Sagun-dong, and help promoting the development of Sagun-dong. The Yongdap Station is also anticipated to provide the inner space connected to the upper floor as well as the lower passage with complex programs related to both the ecology of Cheonggye-Stream and residents' communication.
Design guidelines and the review of alternatives
Deriving concept. The axes of the inner-circulation elevated highway and the railroad in Yongdap-dong are parallel. Transferring the axis to line up with Sageun-dong axis and connecting with the bridge on the lower floor, a triangular area is made. Based on this triangular area, a sloping triangle staircase-square is developed on the upper level of Yongdap Station to meet the platform, below which overall space is organized. Bringing the natural atmosphere and the bicycle trail to the top of Yongdap Station to make a promenade slope towards Cheonggye-Stream, the design allows pedestrians to access directly to the top of the subway station.
Design strategy and Program. There is a large space at lower level where special exhibitions are periodically held, and novel culture programs are proposed for visitors and local residents to mingle. Yongdap-Sageun Bridge is, beyond the notion of conventional passage, redesigned to be an internal square for exhibition and meeting place, and connected to a sloping triangle staircase-square. A free space on the upper floor of the subway station allows conventions or leisure activities for residents to be planned later, while the rooftop is designed to have stairway roof garden that makes the whole station look like a part of the Cheonggye-Stream environment. The study proceeds to design a subway station that properly combines nature greenery and machinery of the infra-facility, and that makes another kind of public architecture to fulfill the New Normal paradigm.

Conclusion
In this study, the design attempted to strengthen the function of the station, by expanding the existing Yongdap Station and connecting the lower and upper floors of the railroad, and to extend the ecology of Cheonggye-Stream to the Station while at the same time, converting the station into a complex social platform that collaborates various programs in the designed circumstances. Throughout the study, it was found that the development of a new railway station sphere centered on Yongdap Station can be another approach to create socio-cultural added value rather than the value of real estate. In addition, we come to anticipation in which recycling the infra-facilities around the Yongdap Station has the subway station turn to a cultural landmark that, as a public architecture, fits New Normal era.
