The language of folklore texts was a subject for investigation from different points of many scientists. In this paper a significant shift of viewpoint is suggested. An effort has been made to comprehensively describe nominative system of the Ukrainian magic folktales, written down in the XIX-th century. The analysis begins with the exposition of the specific genre features of fairy folktales, which influence the language organization of the texts. The differentiation of proper names and general names is one of the main aspects of the exploration, that defines spelling rules of the tales' names. Among the proper names we mark out mono-component and poly-component nominative units. Names-descriptions are a significant and peculiar part of the tales' nomination. They represent archaic element in the Ukrainian magic tales that witnesses deep roots of the Ukrainian culture.

The thesis contains the classification of the researched units according to their semantic meaning, contents, internal form, structure, cultural and national peculiarities. Paradigmatic structure of the nominative system of the Ukrainian tales is an innovative approach in its research. In the paper we determine four nominative paradigms: “positive heroes”, “ironical luckers”, “hero's helpers”, “hero's adversaries”. Each of them consists of nominative rows, which include proper names and appellatives and descriptions as co-referent units. The appellatives and descriptions in the explorated folktales function as independent names or substitute some name. In this context they represent units, that don't pertain to the tale onyms.

Names of folktale characters render with images they mark. Their internal form gives a characteristic of the heroes and helps to define their functional types. Most of folktale anthroponyms and mythonyms expose the peculiarities of the named persons. A group of units with “dark” semantics has been defined. They have lost the internal form and content in the process of language development.

According to the archaic world outlook personal names fixed in the tale texts are analysed in connection with correlating with them names of animals and plants. These names are a kind of cultural codes. National-cultural element of their semantics expresses additional metaphoric meaning of zoonyms and plant names. They also figurate in the metamorphic chains of heroes' transformation. Thus the tale characters can change their initial human images and get new features and peculiarities. Besides the animal characters there is a group of zoomorphic fiancйes, that have double nomination -- as an animal and as a human. Transformation is one of the most important elements of magic folktales. That's why segments of the animals and plants names are joined with person names and mythonyms. In general semantic and connotative meaning is a specific feature of nominative units spread in the investigated folklore texts. This determines the peculiarities of the semantic and functional system of naming in the Ukrainian magic folktales, written down in the XIX-th century.
