Not in all studies gender is significantly associated with risky sexual behaviour. Although studies show that girls have higher sexual health literacy than boys (Langille et al. 1998, Mahat 2010), researchers do not find this difference significant for safe sexual behaviour (Faryna and Morales 2000, Swenson et al. 2010). As for this research, there is also no significant difference between females and males in their use of contraception. Researchers assume that both male and female adolescents are nevertheless involved in risky sexual behaviour: for males, a large number of partners becomes the factor that leads them to unsafe sexual practices, and for females it means a less frequent use of contraception (Kotchick et al. 2001). The existing research (Rosenstock, Strecher, and Becker 1994) also suggests that socio-demographic factors may indirectly influence human behaviour. Socio-demographic factors can influence self-efficacy, perception of susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, and perceived barriers (Rosenstock, Strecher, and Becker 1994).
5.Limitations
Sexual literacy is the capacity to evaluate, understand and weigh the risks, duties and consequences of sexual actions, and the concept implies the freedom from sexual violence and discrimination (Haffner 1995, Tolman, Striepe, and Harmon 2003). In this work, Sexual health literacy was calculated as the number of correct answers about types of contraception and their effectiveness, and it limits the understanding of the relationship between sexual literacy and behaviour. Other aspects of evaluating sexual literacy can be expected to demonstrate other effects. For example, in a study by Kayiki and Forste (2011), literacy regarding the proper use of condoms showed a strong association with safe sexual behaviour (which means using a condom). It seems reasonable if, in subsequent studies, adolescent knowledge about the types of STDs, HIV/AIDS transmission, and the proper use of different types of contraception would be also measured, the results may reveal significant associations for both sexual behaviour and self-efficacy of condom use.
One type of sexual behaviour was measured in this work - prevention of pregnancy during the last sexual contact. Since the methods of protection against STDs and pregnancy can be different, it is also important to consider which protective measures against STDs were used by a teenager. The use of contraception during a recent sexual intercourse is an important predictor of safe sexual behaviour and has also been used in many studies of sexual behaviour (Langille et al. 1998; Coyle et al. 1999; Bankole et al. 2007; Wiener, Battles, and Wood 2007), but in the future, it is worth measuring sexual behaviour based on experience using contraception during the entire sexual life of a teenager.
