The presented study set out to check that hypothesis. An experiment was conducted. In that experiment, the participants memorised colored objects pertaining to different categories with specific categorical colors. Half of the categories contained outstanding objects that were presented in a color different from the category color.

The results of the conducted experiment showed that ordinary objects were not biased toward outstanding objects. Furthermore, there was no evidence that outstanding objects were included in gist representations. The outstanding objects were, however, remembered differently than ordinary objects: they were biased away from the mean color of the category. Overall, the results of the study described in this thesis support the idea of an adaptive mechanism in visual long-term memory, and imply that this mechanism is more complex than previously believed: it takes into account whether specific objects are representative of the group as a whole and uses that information to minimize error across all trials.

It should be pointed out a possible delimitation of the study: since outstanding objects were not remembered better than ordinary objects, opposed to the predictions based on the role of saliency in memory, it is possible that the outstanding objects were not salient enough to attract more attention than ordinary objects. This possibility, however, does not contradict the theoretical conclusions proposed in this thesis. Additional research regarding saliency and gist representations would further detail the scientific understanding of interaction of visual information and the complexity of the adaptive processes in visual long-term memory.
