ESSAY

REAGAN DOCTRINE

When I was choosing topic for my research paper I wanted to take something related to history and at the same time to politics, since I am a student of the International Relations department. Topic that I have chosen can give me more deeper understanding about what is doctrine and how this word is actually related to the government policy. While I was searching the information about doctrine, and especially about Reagan Doctrine I found a lot of useful and interesting facts about this topic. Many of people in our country, especially young students have no idea about what is Reagan Doctrine, maybe they know the definition of the word `doctrine' and the president Reagan, but I am not sure that they know what this doctrine is about and what kinds of ideas it represents. So, my purpose is to make this paper as much informative, understandable as it possible.

To give a clear understanding of Reagan Presidential Doctrine I intend to divide my paper into three sections. In the first section, I am going to be explaining the word `doctrine' and its usage. In the second section, I illustrate the concept of Reagan Doctrine and provide its tactics. In the last section, I discuss the aim of Reagan Doctrine and the goals they achieved. After there are a conclusion, notes and the Works Cited page, which contains sources I have used while, writing my research paper. doctrine reagan president

What is doctrine? According to my researches the word doctrine came from the Greek language with a word didache (did-akh-ay'); and means instruction, or teaching. For example by the study of Timothy M. Youngblood doctrine defines as `a body or system of teaching relating to a particular subject such as the "doctrine of a Church"'. It is believed that doctrine should represent nothing but true beliefs by which people can follow, but there is opinion of a well known minister that doctrine is not true and we can see it by his quote: `Doctrine, on the other hand, is not "the Truth." Doctrine is our best approximation of the truth. It is what we have decided to teach and therefore doctrine is manmade. No human being, nor any church, can claim to have discovered perfect truth. As long as we are human, we can make mistakes, and it is patently wrong not to acknowledge our fallibility in our doctrines. The number of changes we have had to make in our teachings over time is witness to our imperfection and fallibility in doctrine.' He has a very strong statement, but still, doctrine has to be based on some real information and the make their own vision, because people who have their own doctrine are writing it to teach and give readers a right steps to acquire some skills. So, basically, doctrine is a set of teaching or beliefs that are taught or believed to be true. In politics doctrine states government policy, especially in international relation.

The Concept and Tactics of Reagan Doctrine. Ronald Wilson Reagan was 40th president of the United States of America. He is well known for implementing the Reagan Doctrine during his term. 1 The concept of his doctrine was to support anti-Communist revolutions and overwhelm influence from the Soviet Union side during the Cold War. Charles Krauthammer 2 in his work The Reagan Doctrine has pointed out: `You may not have noticed. Doctrines, like submarines, tend to be launched with fanfare. The Monroe Doctrine was instantly recognized, on both sides of the Atlantic, as a historic declaration; the Truman Doctrine was unveiled in a dramatic address to a joint session of Congress; and when President Carter announced a new aggressive Persian Gulf policy on January 23, 1980, by the next morning the New York Times had dubbed it "the Carter Doctrine." President Reagan saw fit to bury his doctrine in his 1985 State of the Union address beneath the balanced budget amendment, school prayer and the line-item veto. That he decided to make his a footnote is as much a tribute to Mr. Reagan's prudence as to his modesty. Truly new ideas what Democrats lie awake at night dreaming of are as risky as they are rare. This one has already precipitated a storm'.

In February 1985, US President announced the doctrine, according to which he was going to build in the future foreign policy of the United States. Reagan suggested the United States to return to conduct, as it was before the Vietnam War, a truly global policy. In his interpretation, this meant the US readiness to confront the international communism simultaneously all over the world.

Despite the statement in the name of the new doctrine of global goal, it was primarily focused on Latin America, on Africa and Asia. In November 1986 it became known that the US government secretly sold arms to Iran and used received millions of dollars to provide some help for the Nicaraguan `Contras'. The US Congress denounced the illegal nature of the transaction, known as the Iran-Contras or Irangate, nevertheless supported the foreign policy of the Reagan administration.

Aims of the Reagan Doctrine and Goals they achieved. The Reagan Doctrine is one of the ten presidential doctrines 3of foreign policy. The main goal of this doctrine was to support all revolutions directed against communism. In addition to the purposes of confrontation "communism" in Latin America, assistance on the basis of the doctrine in the mid-80s as the United States stood out the racist government of South Africa, the authoritarian regimes of the Philippines, Pakistan and anti-government forces in Afghanistan. In the United States was noticed the decline of foreign policy activity of the USSR and tried to use it to expel the Soviet Union from areas where it could gain influence over the preceding decades. The US administration has supported anti-Communist or pro-American forces including Afghanistan, Angola, Vietnam, Iran, Cambodia, Laos, Libya, Nicaragua, Ethiopia, Poland, the Warsaw Pact countries, except the Soviet Union. In some of these countries (Afghanistan, Angola, and Nicaragua) in the period were civil wars, which can be viewed as proxy wars in the framework of the Cold War. And in Poland, martial law was introduced and deployed a new round of repression by the authorities.

The United States began a new phase of the arms race, believing that the Soviet Union is not able to "keep up" for their progress in this area. The result of the implementation of this doctrine can be seen as overthrow of many "pro-Soviet" regimes and even the disintegration of the USSR.

CONCLUSION. From my research work I can say that any kind of teaching or belief should show its importance by having strong arguments, what I can say about Reagan Doctrine.

This Doctrine had big aims against communist countries. I would say that the main benefit of this doctrine was the contribution to the politics development.

Also it affected positively small governments in process of forming. As well it fought for thee democracy within the United States and other countries. But it also had negative sides. For instance, via diplomatic efforts they supported Afghanistan fighters, also they adopted some old traditions of anti-communists.
