Hiding behind a mask

Dormidontova Aitalina

Expository Writing

Mr. Martin Widolff

9 June 2015

A bird inside a cage cannot sing as wonderfully as it would in nature where it belongs and was meant to be. The same with people when they are doing what they are passionate about in the place where they feel like they belong, people are simply happy. Unfortunately, many people are unhappy, for a lot of reasons: unhappy with the job they chose, not satisfied with the money they earn, as well as the unhappy marriage.

Irene, from the story "The Hidden Woman", is married and lies to her husband to go to the Opera Ball. When the husband recognizes Irene in the ball she looks happy, like she belonged there, back to her native brutality and "restored to her irremediable solitude".

Could it be that if she could, she wouldn't be married and would lead such lifestyle of being free?

Could it be that society in 1924 would not understand her? Irene might be married just because every woman has to be, but sometimes she could be hiding behind a mask to feel free again ignoring responsibilities of being a married woman. hidden woman freedom marriage

It is not a secret that you sacrifice your freedom when you get married, and many people don't mind it at all; in fact, they are eager to do so with the special person they love. Irene is married, and according to her thoughts she is "prude" and doesn't want to go there alone without her husband, she seems to be an introverted person. Seems like her husband doesn't know her, he was surprised to see her at the ball and the way she was kissing other people, dressed as a man. At the same time husband says that "she was not looking for anyone" and "having pleasure of being alone", meaning that he was sure she wasn't cheating on him. Irene is an extraverted person, who is very outgoing and sociable, because her husband saw her "restoring" her solitude, kissing many man, not staying with one, and the drawn conclusion would be that she is trapped in the marriage and has to act as an introverted wife; she has lost her freedom in her marriage. She lies to her husband, and breaks the vow of being sincere and honest to her husband; the reason is her complex personality. Marriage was holding her back away from who she was, the way she was expressing herself when she was free and single.

Irene has a very interesting personality; although the text was short, you can still find her interesting; the way she was dressed as the Pierro who is a man; also the way she behaves like a man touches a woman's breast. It was a game that she was playing, fulfilling her desire of being alone and free. Many married women are curious if they could still be attractive to the other man; there are many reasons for that: ageing, boredom of family life, having one partner for a long time. Irene needed to know if she could still be free and was curious to know if she could still be close to another person both physically and mentally, that's why she found Opera Ball as an excuse to try and see. Costumes and masks, music and dancing, and being unknown make people to get close physically without any responsibility.

There is a possibility that Irene has lost her freedom by obeying 1924's society's "marriage culture" by getting married, people nowadays would not judge a single woman as much as during that period of time; but it is also the way she is, her wild personality. She doubted her ability to be free again, and she wanted it back for at least a night with no responsibility of being a wife. The fact that she cheated on her husband is indeed wrong, and her husband was at the ball for the same reason, to stay unknown to be with some unknown woman, and nobody would known; this marriage wouldn't last long because they were lying to each other, they were not true to each other, and we could only guess if there is still love between them. Although husband doesn't seem like he would confront her, but he will be always watching her.
