It is known that Edgar Allan Poe is considered to be “the master of horror”. Certainly he succeeded due to the expressiveness and emotiveness he put into his works (not only poems). But it is not enough. While reading the poems “Ulalume” and “The Raven” aloud, the reader feels strange uneasiness (even better to say anxiety) and thrill. These emotions are caused by the felicitous usage of the stylistic devices. Lexical stylistic devices (in the given poems - metaphors, epithets, hypallages, similes, allusions etc.) contribute to the creation of the sober atmosphere in the reader's mind; lexical repetitions (lexical anaphors, lexical epistrophes, lexical anadiplosis etc.) and phonetic stylistic devices (alliterations, assonances, different kinds of rhyming, onomatopoeia) make the poem sound like an ancient paternoster. No doubt, such a mix would certainly make the reader feel ill at ease.
To sum up, the stylistic analysis of the poems given in the parts “The stylistic analysis of the poem “Ulalume” by Edgar Allan Poe” and “The stylistic analysis of the poem “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe” is far from being a limit. Surely one could investigate the particular topic more thoroughly and expand its boundaries, since the subject is not elaborated completely due to the space limitations.
